Think of the key light as the sun in a natural outdoor setting – it\’s the brightest and most influential light source. Its placement dictates how shadows fall, how facial features are emphasized, and where the audience\’s eye is drawn.

Key Considerations for Key Light Placement

 

Angle: The angle of the key light (both horizontal and vertical) profoundly impacts the appearance of the performer.

Frontal Key Light (0° horizontal): Directly from the audience\’s perspective, this provides even, shadow-free illumination. While good for visibility, it can flatten features and lack a dramatic impact.

Diagonal Key Light (45° horizontal): A classic and highly versatile approach. Placed roughly 45 degrees to the left or right of the performer, and typically 30-45 degrees vertically, it creates natural-looking shadows that reveal depth and form.

Side Key Light (90° horizontal): Placed directly to the side of the performer. This emphasizes the profile, creates dramatic shadows, and can be used to carve out the performer from the background.

Back Key Light (180° horizontal / Backlight): Placed directly behind the performer. This creates a halo or rim of light, separating the performer from the background and adding a sense of depth and dimensionality.

Top Key Light (Vertical): Directly overhead. Creates strong shadows under the eyes and chin, which can be dramatic or stark.

Under Key Light (Vertical from below): Casts shadows upwards, creating a distorted, often sinister or ghostly effect.

Intensity: The brightness of the key light relative to other lights. It should be the dominant light source to establish its role.

Colour Temperature: The colour of the key light will set the mood. Warm colours suggest warmth or intimacy. Cool colours can suggest night or mystery.

A ‘gobo’ is a metal or glass stencil or template placed inside or in front of a lighting fixture. It shapes the emitted light, creating a patterned or shaped beam. Common examples include tree leaves, window panes, or abstract designs.

Gobos are used to add texture to a scene, create shadow effects, or project specific patterns onto surfaces, such as simulated window shadows or leaves for a forest ambiance.

Fading refers to the gradual increase or decrease in light intensity. It’s a fundamental technique used to shift between different lighting states or scenes.

Stage Lighting Fixtures: Tools for Every Scenario

Knowing the types of lighting fixtures is crucial for a designer, as each type fits specific tasks. We’ll categorise them by primary function and outline typical features.
 

Conventional (Static) Fixtures

These fixtures are fixed in position once rigged and provide a consistent beam of light.

Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS) / Profile Spots

Characteristics: Produce a sharp, defined beam edge. They include internal shutters for precise beam shaping and can accept gobos (templates for projecting patterns) and irises (to adjust beam size). Many offer zoom capabilities for variable beam angles.

Best For: Precision lighting, sharp focus, pattern projection, and creating pools of light.

Fresnel Spotlights

Characteristics: Produce a soft-edged, diffused beam of light. They typically have a movable lens for adjusting the beam spread from a tight spot to a wide flood. Often used with barndoors for basic beam shaping.

Best For: Soft, even washes, blending light, backlighting, top lighting, or general area illumination where a harsh edge is undesirable.

PAR Cans

Characteristics: A simpler, rugged fixture that produces a strong, often intense beam. The beam angle is determined by the fixture\’s internal design or interchangeable lenses. Modern LED PARs offer full colour mixing.

Best For: High intensity, punchy beams, vibrant colour washes, accent lighting, or creating a raw, energetic feel.

Wash Lights / Cyc Lights (Cyclorama Lights)

Characteristics: Designed to provide a wide, even field of light over a large area, such as a backdrop (cyclorama or scrim) or a large stage area. Linear versions are common for Cyc illumination.

Best For: Creating broad colour washes, setting atmospheric tones, and evenly illuminating backdrops.

Moving Head Fixtures

These fixtures offer dynamic control over pan, tilt, colour, beam size, gobos, and focus from a control console. This adds significant versatility and the ability to introduce movement into a design.

Moving Head Spot/Profile

Characteristics: Combine the precision and pattern projection of an ERS with the movement of a moving head. Features often include gobos (static and rotating), prisms, iris, zoom, and framing shutters.

Best For: Dynamic specials, follow spot effects, projecting moving patterns, flexible key lighting that can follow a performer, and beam effects.

Moving Head Wash

Characteristics: A moving version of a wash light, offering wide beam angles, full colour mixing, and the ability to pan and tilt. Some advanced models include individual LED pixel control for intricate effects.

Best For: Dynamic colour washes, broad area illumination that can shift quickly, aerial effects with wide beams, and creating \”eye candy\” effects.

Moving Head Beam

Characteristics: Produces an extremely narrow, intense, parallel beam of light. Less about illuminating a performer directly, more about creating sharp shafts of light in the air.

Best For: High-impact aerial effects, graphic looks, creating \”light curtain\” effects, often seen in concerts and large-scale productions.

Approaches to Lighting a Performer: Beyond the Single Key

 
While the key light is fundamental, a sophisticated lighting design rarely relies on just one. The art lies in combining various lighting angles and intensities to create a cohesive and impactful visual narrative. Here are several common approaches to lighting a performer, often used in conjunction with a dominant key light, along with suitable fixture types.

Frontal & Fill Lighting (The \”Three-Point\” System)

This is a widely adopted method for general visibility and a pleasing aesthetic.
 

Key Light: Provides primary illumination.

Suitable Fixtures:  

Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS) for precise control or Moving Head Spots/Profiles for dynamic key lights that can follow a performer.
 

Fill Light: Softens shadows created by the key light.

Suitable Fixtures:  

Fresnel Spotlights for a soft, even fill. Moving Head Washes (dimmed significantly) can also provide a broad, soft fill.
 

Back Light (Hair Light/Rim Light): Separates the performer from the background.

Suitable Fixtures:  

Fresnel Spotlights or PAR Cans from upstage positions. Moving Head Washes from upstage truss for dynamic rim lighting.

Side Lighting (Sculpting with Light)

Side lighting, using two lights at approximately 90° to the performer, is powerful for revealing form, texture, and movement.
 

Suitable Fixtures:  

Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS) for sharp, defined side light that sculpts the body. Fresnel Spotlights for softer, more diffused side light. PAR Cans for a strong, punchy side accent. Moving Head Spots/Profiles from boom positions for precise, dynamic side specials that can follow movement. Moving Head Washes for broader, moving side washes for dance or large ensemble pieces.

Backlighting Dominance (Creating Silhouette & Mood)

When the key light is de-emphasised or eliminated in favour of strong backlighting.
 

Purpose: To create dramatic silhouettes, evoke mystery, or emphasise the end of a scene.

Suitable Fixtures:  

PAR Cans (often in multiples) positioned upstage and low for intense, coloured back washes.  
Cyc Lights for broad, even backlighting of a cyclorama or backdrop, creating strong contrast. Moving Head Washes (positioned upstage and low) for wide, intense coloured back washes. Moving Head Beam fixtures for extremely intense, narrow beam silhouettes or aerial effects.

Top Lighting & Downlighting (Defining Space & Isolation)

Top lighting, emanating directly from above the performer, casts strong shadows downwards.
 

Purpose: To create isolation, pressure, or a strong singular focus.

Suitable Fixtures:  

Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlights (ERS) for tight, isolating pools. Fresnel Spotlights for a softer, more diffused top light. Moving Head Spots/Profiles from overhead truss positions for precise, dynamic top lighting that can track performers.

Underlighting (Distortion & Unease) Light from below, casting shadows upwards.

 

Purpose: To create an eerie, ghostly, or distorted appearance.

Suitable Fixtures:  

Compact PAR Cans are placed at floor level, often hidden behind set pieces. Smaller Moving Head Washes are placed low on the stage for dynamic, colour-changing underlighting effects.

Practical & Motivated Lighting(Integrating Source into Design)

Using light that appears to come from a real-world source on stage (e.g., a lamp, a window).
 

Key Light Role (Augmentation):  

The practical light itself can act as the key. Off-stage lighting instruments are then used to augment or reinforce its direction and quality.
 

Suitable Fixtures:  

Small, discreet LED strip fixtures or compact PAR Cans positioned to mimic the direction and quality of the practical. While less common for direct mimicry, a Moving Head Spot/Profile could be used subtly offstage to reinforce the motivated light, adding a more dynamic \”glow\” around the practical source.

Area Lighting & Washes (General Illumination & Environment)

Providing overall illumination and setting the scene.
 

Suitable Fixtures:  

PAR Cans (in multiples) for general stage washes. Fresnel Spotlights for softer area illumination. Cyc Lights for broad, even backdrop and environmental washes. Moving Head Washes are ideal for dynamically changing full stage washes, setting atmospheric tones, and quickly adapting to scene changes.
